Hidden in plain sight, the Villa Ury Plaque whispers tales of courage and resilience. This unassuming marker, affixed to the elegant Gästhaus Leipzig, commemorates a pivotal moment in the city’s history. The Villa Ury, originally built in 1908 as Villa Seemann for publisher Arthur Seemann, later became home to the prominent Jewish Ury family. This family, known for establishing Leipzig’s first department store in 1896, unknowingly stood on the precipice of a dark chapter in history. From 1936, the villa served as the Polish Consulate, a beacon of hope in the gathering storm. As the Nazi regime tightened its grip, the villa became a sanctuary. In October 1938, Polish Consul General Feliks Chiczwewski, aware of impending deportations, took extraordinary action. He warned his Jewish compatriots and opened the consulate, including his own residence, to those facing persecution. The consulate, considered extraterritorial, offered refuge to 1296 individuals, shielding them from forced expulsion. This act of defiance, immortalized by the Villa Ury Plaque, stands as a testament to human compassion amidst unimaginable cruelty.
