Hidden amongst the heartlands of Singapore stands Surau Ghim Moh a humble testament to community faith and resilience. This unassuming prayer room nestled at the void deck of Block 2 Ghim Moh Road holds a story far richer than its modest exterior suggests.

For 38 years Surau Ghim Moh has served as a sanctuary for Muslim residents. It was built in 1981 a response to the needs of 500 Muslim families. Their homes had been demolished to make way for new HDB flats. The nearest mosque was a grueling 45-minute bus ride away. Many were elderly. The need for a local prayer space was overwhelming.

Former MP Abbas Abu Amin and former Cabinet Minister Ahmad Mattar championed the cause. They successfully lobbied for permission to establish Surau Ghim Moh at the void deck. This was unusual. Authorities were initially concerned about inclusivity. The community’s dedication won them over. Surau Ghim Moh became unique. It was the only void-deck surau permitted in Singapore.

Initially the prayer space was rudimentary. The congregation used canvas and cardboard. Over time through donations and community efforts the surau was upgraded. It now boasts walls fans and lights. Rolling blinds and a proper ablution area were added.

The surau is more than just a place of prayer. It’s a hub for community events. During Ramadan the Singapore Buddhist Lodge donated rice. Al Huda Mosque prepared porridge. Volunteers from the Church of St Ignatius distributed it to residents. This illustrates the interfaith harmony fostered by the surau.

Even today despite a decline in the number of Muslim residents in the area Surau Ghim Moh remains a vital part of Ghim Moh’s identity. It is not only for the residents. Taxi drivers delivery riders and passersby find peace and respite within its walls. Surau Ghim Moh welcomes everyone regardless of race or religion. It’s a true reflection of Singapore’s multicultural spirit. Its story is one of perseverance community and the enduring power of faith.
