This vast nature reserve holds a secret. It’s a story etched in volcanic rock and whispered on the wind. We stand before the impressive Volcán Rota a deeply eroded stratovolcano. It’s part of a larger volcanic complex a landscape shaped by fiery forces. Rota’s name itself holds a clue. It comes from Orota a Chorotega word. It signifies the memory of a tribe’s passage through this very land. Imagine their lives their journeys their connection to this ancient place.
The volcano’s summit reaches 832 meters. Its crater a wide circular scar one kilometer across. It’s lower on the south side a testament to the forces that shaped it. There are no historical records of eruptions. Yet the earth remembers. Seismic swarms in 1986 1989 and 1992 prove that this sleeping giant is not truly extinct. The ground may seem quiet but the earth’s energy flows beneath our feet.
Look around you. Two small lava domes rise from the slopes. One is called “el bosque” or “Lomas San Ignacio del Bosque” or even “Cerro Ojochal”. This small forest is a haven of biodiversity. Tropical dry forest trees such as jocote jobo cortez sardinillo tigüilote quebracho jiñocuabo laurel negro huevo de chancho poro-poro pochote casco de venado and sacuanjoche thrive. It is a testament to life’s resilience. A vibrant ecosystem has found a home on this volcanic landscape.
The Reserva Natural Complejo Volcánico Telica-Rota is more than just volcanoes. It includes the Telica volcano itself. It is one of Nicaragua’s six most active volcanoes. Its double crater smokes constantly. It’s a 700-meter diameter 120-meter deep spectacle. You can even see lava at night. In 2018 it erupted sending a 500-meter plume of smoke ash and rock into the sky.
The complex also holds the Hervideros de San Jacinto. These boiling mud pools are a fascinating geothermal site. They’re connected to the Telica volcano. Sulfurous vapors react with the air. They whiten the rocks forming sulfur crystals. The air is thick with their distinctive smell.
