Did you ever hear of a church so small it needed a second chance? Right here in the San Felipe neighborhood stands the Iglesia San José, one of León’s smallest churches. Originally, Iglesia San José served as a modest chapel for the bustling San Felipe Apostol Church. The neighborhood grew, and so did the need for a larger space. Fray Ramón Rojas de Jesús María, the same architect behind the Iglesia de Guadalupe and the Ermita Nuestra Señora de Dolores, built the original Iglesia San José. Imagine this tiny church, struggling to hold its growing congregation. Then, in the latter half of the 20th century, a new section was added, creating space for the bell tower and main facade you see today. This addition gave Iglesia San José a fresh start. In 2019, the church received another makeover. This time, Presbyter Cipriano Abelardo Toval Ayestas led the renovation, breathing even more life into this historic building. The Iglesia San José is a fascinating blend of architectural styles. The main facade is eclectic, with distinct neo-Gothic touches. Notice the pointed arches of the three doors, the pinnacles, and the pyramidal top of the bell tower. Now, turn your attention to the rest of the building. Here, you’ll find the classic characteristics of Leonese colonial architecture: a tiled roof, rhythmic succession of canes, semicircular arched doorways, simple wooden windows with straight lintels, and adobe walls. Inside, the Iglesia San José features a flat ceiling, with internal niches and a repose on the north wall, supported by large modillions. This little church, once a humble chapel, now stands as a testament to the community’s faith and the enduring spirit of León.
