Hidden within the heart of Azcapotzalco stands the Iglesia De San Martin Xochinahuac. Its weathered stones whisper tales of centuries past. This isn’t just any church. It’s a living link to one of Azcapotzalco’s original 27 settlements recognized by the Dominicans in the 16th century.

Imagine a time long before the church we see today. Picture ancient chinampas flourishing beside a shimmering lake. The Nahuatl name Xochinahuac meaning “next to the flowers” evokes the beauty of this once-thriving agricultural center. While no records pinpoint an earlier chapel here the current Iglesia De San Martin has roots in the late 18th or early 19th century.

Its history is a tapestry woven with threads of time. The original dome and bell tower endure. They silently witness the modifications over the years. In 1974 the nave was extended. The original vault was replaced. Several important paintings adorn the walls dating from 1947 adding vibrant colors to the church’s story.

But the story of the Iglesia De San Martin extends beyond its walls. Just a short distance away near the Metro Tezozomoc station lies a remarkable discovery. In 1967 human remains were unearthed. These belonged to an ancient man measuring an astonishing 2.4 meters tall. The remains of a mammoth were found nearby adding an element of prehistoric wonder to the neighborhood’s rich past. Excavations during the construction of the Metro’s Line 6 uncovered no fewer than 12 mammoth skeletons. These date back an estimated 16,000 to 20,000 years.

The Iglesia De San Martin Xochinahuac isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a treasure chest of history. Its very stones hold secrets from ancient times and the colonial era. A visit here is more than a simple sightseeing trip. It’s a journey through time a tangible connection to Mexico City’s multifaceted heritage. The towering figure of the ancient man. The giant mammoths. The flowers that once grew in abundance. They are all part of the story of this special place the Iglesia De San Martin Xochinahuac.
