It’s a historical tapestry woven with threads of epidemics, revolts, and the lives of poets, generals, and exiles. The Cemitu00e9rio do Maruu00ed began not as a city of the dead, but as a thriving fazenda. In 1751, brothers Francisco and Josu00e9 Pereira, owners of the Fazenda Su00e3o Pedro, found the nearest chapel too far. They built their own, a simple stone and lime structure dedicated to Saint Peter. This chapel, now weathered by time, still stands at the heart of the Cemitu00e9rio do Maruu00ed. Imagine the scene in 1850. Domingos Ferreira Bastos owned the land. He sold it to the provincial government. They saw an opportunity. The land, with its existing chapel and access to the bay, was perfect for a public cemetery. In 1853, construction began. Just two years later, cholera gripped Niteru00f3i. The cemetery, though unfinished, was consecrated. On November 1, 1855, the first funeral took place at Cemitu00e9rio do Maruu00ed. A decree soon followed, making cemetery burials mandatory. The Cemitu00e9rio do Maruu00ed became the final resting place for many. Walk among the weathered stones. You’ll find the mausoleum of poet Fagundes Varela, a marble masterpiece crafted by Ludovico Berna in 1886. Nearby lies Charles de Ribeyrolles, a French exile whose epitaph was penned by Victor Hugo himself. The echoes of the Revolta da Armada resonate here too. A monument honors the fallen officers and soldiers. General Fonseca Ramos, a hero of the revolt, rests in a grand mausoleum designed by Desidu00f3rio Strauss. His tomb, inaugurated in 1911, features a broken column, symbolizing his interrupted life. The Cemitu00e9rio do Maruu00ed is more than just a cemetery.
