This peaceful oasis is home to just 62 single-family and two-family houses, built like a small Bavarian village around a pond and a playground. Unlike other suburbs, Auensiedlung holds a special charm thanks to its unique history.
In the wake of World War II, Munich was facing a severe housing shortage. Many hopeful families sought refuge in the Isar river meadows, building their own homes without official permission. This unauthorised settlement quickly became a hotbed of debate as authorities considered clearing and moving the families.
But the residents were resilient. They formed a “Community of Interest” in 1952, giving their neighbourhood a name that embodies its setting: “Auensiedlung”, meaning “Meadow Settlement”. Their collective spirit was a driving force, leading to the eventual official recognition of the settlement by the city council in 1953. Today, the Auensiedlung is a testament to the perseverance of its founders.
These days, the Auensiedlung is a tranquil haven amidst the vibrant city. The lack of through traffic and the proximity to the Isar River meadows make it an ideal place to raise a family and enjoy the joys of nature. While being just 30 minutes away from the Marienplatz in the city centre, Auensiedlung offers the comforts of a peaceful village.
