What if I told you this building before you has witnessed almost two centuries of student life? Welcome to the Landsmannschaft im CC Salia in Bonn. Founded on November 1 1847 as a club for agricultural students in Poppelsdorf it has a rich history. This fraternity wasn’t always called Salia. It started as the Verein studierender Landwirte zu Poppelsdorf. The name changed several times. It even split once due to disagreements between students of different agricultural specializations.
The Landsmannschaft Salia is part of the Coburger Convent CC a large association of student fraternities. Its members wear distinctive colors black green and red. Fledglings wear black and red. Their motto is Amicitia Honor Patria Friendship Honor Fatherland. This reflects the fraternity’s values.
The Salia’s history is intertwined with other student groups. After World War II Salia reformed. This happened through the fusion of several older fraternities. These included Agraria which had the colors black red and light blue. Marksburgia sported red gold and violet. Prussia from Königsberg had black white and black. Each carried its own traditions and history. All eventually merged to create the Landsmannschaft Salia we see today.
The fraternity faced challenges during the Nazi era. Many student organizations were dissolved. Salia along with Agraria and Marksburgia joined the Kameradschaft Ernst-Moritz-Arndt. This was a way to maintain a sense of community. Even then they continued some traditions like holding social gatherings.
Post-war rebuilding saw Salia emerge anew. It joined the Coburger Convent abandoning the practice of mandatory dueling. They even obtained their own house in 1954. A generous benefactor made this possible. The student dormitory Dr Carl-Theodor Georg which the Salia’s older members support operates this house. It provides affordable housing to students.
The Landsmannschaft Salia continues to thrive. In 1968 it merged with the Landsmannschaft Prussia. It still holds various events including lectures and seminars. The Salia fosters a strong community spirit. Members come from all over the world. Its motto reflects their dedication to friendship honor and their homeland.
