Captured in bronze, Laurie Cunningham stands frozen in time. The Laurie Cunningham Statue commemorates a true footballing pioneer. It immortalizes a player who broke barriers and inspired generations.

Do you see how the Laurie Cunningham Statue faces away from the pitch? The statue is located in Coronation Gardens near Leyton Orient’s Brisbane Road stadium. Laurie Cunningham’s face points towards the bandstand. His back is to the football pitch.

Laurie Cunningham made his debut for Leyton Orient in 1974. He was scouted as a youngster and quickly rose to prominence. In 1979, he became the first black footballer to represent England at the senior level. This was a monumental achievement during a time of prevalent racism in the sport.

His success at Leyton Orient led to a transfer to West Bromwich Albion. Later, Laurie Cunningham joined Real Madrid. He was the first British player to play for the Spanish giants, Los Blancos. At Real Madrid, Cunningham won the double. He later played for Manchester United and other clubs.

Sadly, Laurie Cunningham’s life was cut short in 1989. He died in a car accident in Madrid at the young age of 33. Despite his untimely death, his legacy lives on.

The Laurie Cunningham Statue was unveiled on November 30, 2017. The statue is over seven feet tall. It is modelled after a photograph of Laurie Cunningham in action for Real Madrid. Sculptor Graham Ibbeson designed the statue. He is known for his statues of sporting figures.

The project was initiated by Councillor Chris Robbins. Waltham Forest Council and Kick It Out backed the fundraising campaign. Public donations helped raise almost £3,500.

The inscription on the Laurie Cunningham Statue reads: “Laurie Cunningham. 8 March 1956 – 15 July 1989. The first black footballer to play for England at senior level and the first British player to transfer to Real Madrid. Started his career at Leyton Orient FC (1974-1977). If I can get through this maybe it will lead to others getting a chance.”

The Laurie Cunningham Statue serves as a reminder of his impact. He paved the way for other black athletes. It stands as a symbol of hope and inspiration. It reminds us of his skill, dedication and perseverance.
