In 1504, Cardinal Georges d’Amboise, the prime minister of King Louis XII, decided he needed a refuge, a place far from the intrigues of court. He chose this very spot to build the Château de Vigny. The Château de Vigny quickly became more than just a retreat. It became a stage for history, hosting kings, cardinals, and some of France’s most powerful families. The Château de Vigny’s walls witnessed the reign of Henri II, the conspiracies of Henri II de Montmorency, and the lavish parties thrown by Charles de Rohan, a close friend of Louis XV. The Château de Vigny even played a role in more recent history, serving as a filming location for around 40 movies. Remember “Les Barbouzes” or “On a retrouvé la 7ième compagnie”? Much of the filming happened right here at the Château de Vigny. Rihanna also chose this majestic backdrop for her “Te Amo” music video. The Château de Vigny’s journey hasn’t always been smooth. After years of neglect, it fell prey to dry rot, a devastating fungus. For a time, the Château de Vigny stood supported by hundreds of props, its future uncertain. But thanks to recent restoration efforts, the Château de Vigny is on its way to regaining its former glory. The north wing was saved in 2021, followed by the south wing in 2022. Even now, restoration work continues. The Château de Vigny, with its over 160 rooms and unique outbuildings, represents more than just a building. It embodies centuries of French history. It’s a testament to the enduring power of heritage and the dedication of those who strive to preserve it.
