The distinctive dome shape of Ryan Fieldhouse is based on football punting and kicking trajectories. The peak of the dome reaches 87 feet above the turf field. This unique design not only provides ample space but also adds an architectural flair.

The construction of Ryan Fieldhouse was an impressive feat of engineering. The facility sits on land that was once part of Lake Michigan. The sand-based land had inferior compaction. To accommodate for poor soil conditions, the project team utilized 200 belled caissons.
During construction, the fieldhouse dome was built on the ground in modular sections. Two crawler cranes lifted these sections into place. Laser scanning equipment verified deflections of box tube arches in the dome.
