From this vantage point the Tököl TWR stands tall. A silent sentinel overlooking the vast expanse of the former Tököl Airbase. Its history is etched not in stone but in the very ground beneath our feet.

This isn’t just any tower. This is the Tököl TWR a vital link to the airbase’s past. A past filled with the roar of engines the shriek of bombs and the shifting tides of war. It witnessed the rise and fall of empires the changing hands of power. For decades the Tököl Airbase was a strategically important location. A hotbed of military activity for both the Axis and Allied powers. Then the Soviets claimed it.

Think of the Danubian Aerospace factory. It thrived here. Producing Messerschmitt Bf 210s and Bf 109s for both the Luftwaffe and the Hungarian Air Force. These planes once soared from this very airbase. They defended Hungary’s skies during the tumultuous years of World War II. But this activity didn’t go unnoticed. The Allied forces targeted Tököl. On April 13 1944 the US Air Force launched a devastating air raid. Over 200 tons of bombs rained down. The summer that followed brought more relentless attacks.

After World War II the Soviet Red Army seized control. They didn’t use it immediately. But soon a 2500-meter runway was built. New Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15s and Yakovlev Yak-18s arrived. But the Soviets wouldn’t allow the Hungarians to keep them. During the 1956 Hungarian Revolution the Soviets seized the aircraft. The Hungarians were only allowed to reclaim the airbase twelve years later in 1968.

The Cold War years were crucial. The Soviet Union saw Tököl as a significant military asset. Squadrons from the Soviet Ground Forces and Air Force were stationed here. Helicopters and planes filled the skies. The Soviets didn’t stop there. In the 1980s they constructed impressive air shelters. These were designed to house MiG-29s. The shelters were state-of-the-art. Each had a large exhaust deflector tunnel and blast-proof gates.

Then came the end of the Cold War. The last Soviet unit departed in April 1991. The Hungarian Defence Forces took over. They used it for a few years. But the base was eventually abandoned. The main hangar once used by Danubian Aerospace was demolished replaced by a Tesco supermarket.

Today though the Tököl TWR remains. A testament to the base’s turbulent past. It serves as a reminder of the strategic significance of this location. The Tököl Airbase is used by private citizens now. A few hangars still stand. They house enthusiasts of small aircraft. You might even see a restored Soviet-era Aero L-29 Delfin. The Tököl TWR may be mostly silent today. But its story is far from over. It continues to whisper tales of war peace and the enduring spirit of aviation.
