How did a student rowing club manage to thrive in the midst of World War II? This unassuming building, the Aarhus Studenter Roklub, holds that very tale. Situated right here on the Aarhus harbor, alongside two other rowing clubs, the Aarhus Studenter Roklub, often shortened to ASR, speaks volumes about rowing’s enduring popularity and Denmark’s social landscape in the early 20th century. Founded in 1942, right in the thick of the war, the ASR almost didn’t come to be. The brainchild of Otto Bjerrum, a revisor who missed his student rowing days in Copenhagen, the ASR faced an uphill battle from the start. Building materials were scarce, with cement being strictly rationed. The German occupation added another layer of complexity, particularly around the harbor, considered a sensitive zone. Despite these challenges, Bjerrum secured a plot of land, albeit not the ideal location he had envisioned. With financial support trickling in from local businesses and the backing of the Danish Student Rowing Club, the ASR’s humble clubhouse took shape. Imagine the scene on May 30th, 1943, as a crowd of 200 gathered to witness the ASR’s grand opening. Five boats bobbed gently in the water, ready to be christened. The “Delfinen”, a four-oared inrigger, received its name from no less a figure than the University Rector, Professor Carl Rasting. The ASR, born out of longing and perseverance during a tumultuous time, has stood the test of time. For over 70 seasons, this little clubhouse has buzzed with the energy of student rowers, their laughter echoing across the water, a testament to the enduring spirit of sport and camaraderie.
