In 1873, a bustling hub of learning emerged in Williamstown. This was the Williamstown Primary School. It first opened its doors on January 27th, within the walls of the Williamstown Mechanics Institute on Electra Street. Mr. James Russell led the charge as the school’s first headmaster. Imagine 310 pupils, all neatly dressed, filling the space. The school quickly outgrew its initial home. This led to the establishment of another school in the district. Williamstown North Primary School opened in July 1874. The burgeoning community needed more educational spaces. By July 31st, 1874, the Education Department had purchased land. They acquired part of the Market Reserve from the Williamstown Borough Council. At this point, Williamstown Primary School had over one thousand students enrolled. The need for a larger, permanent structure was clear. Plans were approved for a grand new building. This building would be constructed of stone or brick and accommodate around 800 pupils. Stone was plentiful in Williamstown, and skilled masons were still available. Williamstown Primary School became one of the last major stone buildings in the area. Interestingly, the stone used was quarried right from the school site. The school was slated for completion in November 1877. However, alterations and delays pushed the opening to September 3rd, 1878. The opening of Williamstown Primary School was a grand event. The whole town celebrated. Local tradespeople enjoyed a half-day holiday. Local schools closed so everyone could attend the ceremony. Military bands played, and the Minister for Public Instruction, W. Collard Smith, graced the event. Flags adorned the buildings, and Market Reserve transformed into a carnival. Merry-go-rounds, shooting galleries, and vendors selling sweets and fruit filled the area. Williamstown Primary School wasn’t just a school; it was a symbol of pride. A complete model of the school, including all its internal fittings, was even sent to exhibitions in London and Paris. It showcased the community’s commitment to education. Despite the grandeur, the early days at Williamstown Primary School weren’t without challenges. Water shortages led to requests for large water tanks. A timber fence was needed to keep out “local unemployed youths.” Rain caused waterlogging in the school grounds. This even prompted suggestions of returning to the Mechanics Institute during winter months. The school also faced difficulties with drainage, sanitation, ventilation, and lighting. Poor drainage even destabilized the spire, which was eventually demolished. Early records show a shortage of equipment. Much of what they did have was in disrepair. Over time, Williamstown Primary School has continued to evolve. It has witnessed growth, faced challenges, and adapted to the changing needs of the community it serves. Its history is woven into the fabric of Williamstown, a testament to the enduring importance of education.
