Vucetich’s interest in fingerprints began with a French scientific journal. It detailed the experiments of Francis Galton. Galton a British scientist was pioneering fingerprint identification. Inspired Vucetich began collecting fingerprints from arrested men. He meticulously studied them. He noticed patterns. He devised a classification system.

The turning point came in 1892. Inspector Alvarez investigated a brutal crime in Necochea. A mother had murdered her two young sons. She had also cut her own throat to implicate a neighbor. Alvarez collected a bloody fingerprint. Vucetich compared this to the fingerprints of suspects. The bloody print matched that of the mother Francisca Rojas. She confessed to the crime.

This solved case proved Vucetich’s system. It was a game-changer. His system spread globally. It became the standard for many police forces. His method was simple efficient and accurate. The Argentinan government embraced his innovation. Identification cards were issued. His work led to the publishing of several books. His most famous was Comparative Dactyloscopy.
