Is that Venus rising from the sea? This is the Fuente de las Nereidas. It stands as a testament to art, controversy, and feminine power.

The Fuente de las Nereidas depicts the birth of Venus. She emerges naked from a seashell. Nereids and tritons dance around her. The Argentine sculptress Lola Mora created this masterpiece. It is a beautiful riverside walk that holds one of the most beautiful fountains in the city.

Lola Mora was born Dolores Candelaria Mora Vega. She was a woman ahead of her time. She wanted artistic glory like her male colleagues. She broke rules about what a woman was “supposed” to do.

Lola took private lessons with Santiago Falcucci. He taught her neoclassicism and romanticism. She presented her work at a gallery. This caused scandal because she was a woman. Lola won a scholarship and studied in Rome. She learned from Francesco Paolo Michetti and Giulio Monteverde.

She returned to Buenos Aires. Lola began planning the Fuente de las Nereidas. The city commissioned the sculpture. The original plan was Plaza de Mayo. She sculpted each piece in Rome. Then she brought them to Buenos Aires.

The white marble sculpture was unveiled in 1903. People were horrified by the nudity. The fact that a woman made it added to the controversy. The Fuente de las Nereidas was moved to Puerto Madero.

Lola Mora was a pioneer in many fields. She was a female sculptor and held mining patents. She broke gender stereotypes. Lola promoted equal opportunities and women’s rights.

Despite the controversy, Lola and her art won over Argentinians. The Fuente de las Nereidas is now a national treasure.

The Fuente de las Nereidas is made of white Carrara marble. It represents nereids attending Venus’ birth. Venus rises from a large marine valve. Her father Jupiter supports it. Nereids surround her. They are all nude. They focus on the central scene.

The Fuente de las Nereidas was meant for Plaza de Mayo. The statues’ nudity caused an uproar. It sparked intense debate. It was moved to Avenida Leandro N. Alem. It stayed there for fifteen years. Then it was moved to Costanera Sur. This is near Puerto Madero and the Buenos Aires ecological reserve. Its address is Avenida Tristán Achával Rodríguez 1550.

By presidential decree, the statue was declared a National Historic Monument in 1997.

Today, the Fuente de las Nereidas stands as a magnificent depiction of feminine beauty. Time has finally caught up with it. It’s a reminder of Lola Mora’s pioneering spirit. Her art continues to inspire. The Fuente de las Nereidas stands at the entrance of a beautiful walk near the river, full of trees that cover the entire path. While you can no longer play with its water due to its thick glass protection, its beauty is undiminished. Take a moment to appreciate this masterpiece. Let its story inspire you.
