Native American tribes once thrived in this region, drawn to the abundant resources and the wooded hills. Trails crisscrossed the area, leading to the Chicago portages. Imagine these early inhabitants traversing the same ground where we stand today. European settlers began arriving in the 1830s, drawn by the promise of new beginnings. The Wachter family, Mathias and Josephina, appear in local records as early as 1858, pioneers in this burgeoning community. Farming proved challenging on the hilly terrain, slowing the area’s initial growth. However, the wheels of progress, once set in motion, are difficult to stop. The early 20th century saw the establishment of the prestigious Hickory Hills Country Club in 1917. Its 18-hole golf course, designed by the renowned Scottish-American golfer James Foulis, became a social hub and a testament to the area’s growing appeal. World War II dramatically altered the landscape of Hickory Hills. Affordable housing sprang up along the southern edges, accommodating migrant workers employed in the region’s vital defense industries. This influx of residents spurred the need for organized governance. In 1951, Hickory Hills officially incorporated as a village. The residents sought control over building codes and essential municipal services. Their foresight also prevented the neighboring village of Bridgeview from annexing valuable commercial land. The transformation from a rural village to a thriving city continued. In 1966, Hickory Hills officially became a city. Septic tanks were replaced with a modern sewer system. The city connected to Lake Michigan water, securing a vital resource for its growing population. Hickory Hills today stands as a testament to its resilient and resourceful community. The rolling hills and hickory trees that inspired its name still define the landscape. This town, a blend of residential charm and commercial vibrancy, boasts three major shopping districts.
