Evergreen Baptist Church is more than just a building. It is a vibrant, inter-generational congregation. It is a family-focused group of individuals. They believe kids are important. They know youth are their future. Adults need to continue to grow here. And worship should be exciting.
Let’s step back in time. In 1907, 89 bold believers cleared ground in Evergreen, Virginia. They wanted to establish a new church. The first service happened in April 1908. A month later, Sunday school began. In 1908, the church family dedicated the first building. It was dedicated to God’s purpose. That purpose was to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They witnessed His saving power. They ministered to the needs of the people.
An educational building was built 20 years later. Over the years, many programs were held. VBS and local missions were popular. These were often in partnership with Evergreen United Methodist, a sister church. In the 1990s, a new worship center was built. It could seat over 400 people. This helped them reach their community and world. They did this through missions. They had an online presence. And they worked with the Southern Baptist Convention.
Evergreen Baptist Church has had 29 pastors. Each led with unique strengths and personalities. The current pastor has a passion for the Word. They have a creative preaching style. They show an excitement to try new ways to reach the world. All pastors hold to the principle to hold up Christ. They hold Jesus Christ the Savior before the world.
More buildings were added. More ministries were created. More missions were undertaken. More people connected to the Lord and to each other. The last 110 plus years have shown a passion. They give God glory. They gather together for worship. They grow in God’s grace and love. And they go out to share the good news and His love.
Evergreen Baptist Church is also connected to a wider network. It is an active member of the Evergreen Baptist Association. This association is part of the American Baptist Churches USA. Evergreen Association conducts business through consensus. This ensures everyone’s voice is heard.
