Hidden amongst the bustling streets of Uskudar stands Balaban Tekkesi Mescidi. This unassuming mosque holds a rich history. It was built in the 1630s by Isfendiyar Balaban Ahmed Baba. Balaban Tekkesi Mescidi wasn’t always a mosque. In the 1770s it became the Sa’diyye Tekke a Sufi lodge.
A devastating fire in 1829 caused significant damage. The Balaban Tekkesi Mescidi was later repaired. It continued to function until the closure of lodges in the Ottoman Empire. A marble inscription detailing repairs by Sheikh Afir Efendi in 1909 mysteriously vanished. Later it reappeared. It was unearthed in 1975. The inscription was placed in front of the small cemetery.
The Balaban Tekkesi Mescidi fell into disrepair after its destruction in the 1940s. It remained in ruins for a long time. Thanks to the Uskudar Municipality and the Foundations Association Balaban Tekkesi Mescidi was restored. Old photographs aided the meticulous restoration. Work began in 2007 and concluded in 2012. During the restoration the inscription was moved. It now adorns the north entrance.
Today Balaban Tekkesi Mescidi serves as the Balaban Tekkesi Cultural Center. It is a vibrant hub for cultural activities. Various classes are held in its three-story building. The small cemetery in the courtyard holds a significant grave. It is the resting place of the founder Balaban Ahmed Baba.
