Nestled in the mountains of Hiroshima lies a serene sanctuary. It is the Yambuchi Shrine. Gaze upon the torii gate bearing the inscription “Tenpo”. It marks the entrance to a place of reverence.

Yambuchi Shrine stands in the heart of Hiroshima’s Asa Kita Ward. Specifically, you can find it in the Fukawa area at 446 Fukawa. This is according to records.

The enshrined deities are Amaterasu Omikami and Sugawara no Michizane. Amaterasu is the sun goddess. Sugawara is the god of learning. The shrine’s annual festival takes place on October 5th. The grounds span 1,162 tsubo. The outer grounds cover 1.969 tsubo.

Yambuchi Shrine has a history dating back to 1599. At that time, the Yambuchi Hachimangu Shrine held nine to nine sho of land. It was deeply revered by the Mori clan. Originally, it enshrined Hachiman. It was called Hachimangu Shrine. Later, the enshrined deities became what they are today.

The priest in charge is Ainosuke Hisanouchi. He also serves concurrently at other shrines. Ninety households are its parishioners. This information comes from the Hiroshima Prefecture Shrine records.

High on the mountain slope, you can glimpse Yambuchi Shrine’s main hall. From below the torii gate, stairs lead to Yambuchi Shrine’s entrance. Ascend those steps. Discover the history and beauty of this sacred place.
