Hidden in plain sight, the Église Notre-Dame-de-Lorette whispers tales of Parisian history. Right here, on this very spot, stood a 17th-century chapel, also dedicated to Notre-Dame-de-Lorette. The French Revolution swept through, leaving no stone unturned. The chapel, seized by the revolutionary government, met its demise. Decades later, in 1823, the neighborhood, brimming with artists and scholars, needed a new spiritual heart. Architect Louis-Hippolyte Lebas answered the call, creating the Église Notre-Dame-de-Lorette. Construction finished in 1836. The church stands as a testament to neoclassical architecture, its exterior a picture of austere elegance. But step inside, and you’ll find a different world. A riot of color and artistry unfolds within the Église Notre-Dame-de-Lorette. Murals burst forth from the walls, a vibrant tapestry of biblical scenes and celestial visions. The coffered ceilings, gilded and intricate, draw your gaze upwards. They bear the monogram of the Virgin Mary, the dove of the Holy Spirit, and roses. Roses, a symbol of Mary, “the Mystic Rose.” These gilded ceilings echo those of the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica in Rome and the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Two titans of French culture, Georges Bizet and Claude Monet, were baptized within these very walls. Bizet in 1840, and Monet, the master of light, in 1841. Ironically, the church’s name took on a different connotation in the 1840s. “Lorette” became a term for women of loose morals, due to the presence of prostitutes in the surrounding area. A hidden gem awaits those who seek it within the Église Notre-Dame-de-Lorette. A stained-glass window, “The Window of Assumption,” designed by Jérôme-Marie Delorme and crafted by the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory, lies almost hidden. Visitors must request permission to witness its brilliance. Église Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, a place of worship, a canvas of art, a silent witness to Parisian history. Its story, woven into the fabric of the city, waits to be discovered.
