What if peacocks roamed freely on your school campus? At Greenhill School, this isn’t a hypothetical. These vibrant birds are practically the unofficial mascots of this esteemed institution. Greenhill School sits on 78 acres in Addison, Texas, a stone’s throw from the bustling heart of Dallas. Founded in 1950 by Bernard Fulton, Greenhill School was a pioneer. It was the first co-educational, non-denominational pre-K through 12th-grade school in Dallas. Today, it educates around 1,400 students from all corners of the Dallas Metroplex. Greenhill is renowned for its rigorous academics. Students tackle a challenging curriculum and must complete 48 hours of community service before graduation. But Greenhill is more than just textbooks and tests. It’s a vibrant hub of extracurricular activities. The school’s band, orchestra, debate, film, and quiz bowl programs have all earned national recognition. Greenhill’s history is etched into its very architecture. The original Upper School building was once a farmhouse, even housing the library, cafeteria, and administrative offices. Fires in 1963 and 1987 tested the school’s resilience, but each time, Greenhill rose from the ashes, stronger than before. Traditions at Greenhill are unique and cherished. Every year, the senior class transforms the water tower in the parking lot into a vibrant canvas, spray-painting their names and a class theme. On the first day of school, this freshly painted tower greets students, with seniors dressed in white (girls) and black (boys). Founder’s Day, held on September 11th, commemorates the school’s establishment. The longest-serving faculty member joins the Student Council President to light the Founder’s Day candle, a symbolic passing of the torch. Greenhill’s influence extends far beyond its campus. Its alumni have made their mark in diverse fields. From musicians like David Berman and Martie Maguire of The Chicks, to award-winning film director Lesli Linka Glatter, to Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, Greenhill graduates are shaping the world. So, next time you see a peacock strutting its feathers, remember Greenhill School. It’s a place where tradition meets innovation, and where students are prepared not just for college, but for life.
