In 1860, a grand, new Ridehuset rose in Aarhus. This wasn’t the city’s first riding house. A smaller one, built in 1818, once stood south of the city. It even hosted the selection of Aarhus representatives for the Danish Constituent Assembly. But this new Ridehuset, designed by H. Jespersen and built by H. Lanberg, was something special. Ridehuset became part of the Vester Allé Barracks. Imagine dragoons practicing their equestrian skills within its walls. The architecture reflects the historicism of the time, drawing inspiration from classic European styles. Notice the cast iron windows and ventilation rosettes. These details speak to the era’s advancements in metallurgy. The slate roof, a common feature in historicist buildings, became affordable thanks to readily available Welsh slate. Ridehuset blends its military function with medieval aesthetics. Look closely at the crenellated corner towers and the brickwork. These decorative elements hint at the building’s original purpose. Inside, the timber construction adds a distinct character. It’s not just functional. It’s a key element of the building’s charm. However, the initial roof structure wasn’t as sturdy as it looked. In 1869, reinforcements were added for stability. The dragoons called Ridehuset home until 1932. The regiment then merged with the 5th Dragoon Regiment. They relocated to Randers as the Jyske Dragon Regiment. Ridehuset saw new occupants, including a tank company, cyclist squadrons, and artillery units. During World War II, German forces occupied the barracks, including Ridehuset. Danish troops returned in June 1945. By the late 1960s, most military units had left Aarhus. The last soldiers marched out of the Vester Allé Barracks in 1969. Ridehuset faced an uncertain future, along with the Officers’ Building. Some argued for demolition to make way for modern structures. Others championed preservation, suggesting alternative uses like social work or youth activities. After years of debate, the city council finally voted for preservation in 1976. Ridehuset’s survival was solidified in 1979 when it received protected status. Today, Ridehuset thrives as a cultural hub. It hosts concerts, festivals, fairs, and community events. The main hall, spanning 900 square meters, can hold up to 950 people. Ridehuset stands as a testament to Aarhus’s commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing its vibrant cultural scene.
