Sculpted in marble, frozen in time, stands “Die Zeit enthüllt die Wahrheit” here in Dresden’s Grosser Garten. This isn’t just another statue. It’s a story captured in stone, a tale of truth unveiled. Created around 1720 by the Italian sculptor Antonio Corradini, “Die Zeit enthüllt die Wahrheit” has witnessed almost three centuries of history unfold within this park. It is one of the few surviving marble sculptures adorning the Grosser Garten. Look closely at the details: a bearded old man, representing Time, pulls back a veil from a beautiful young woman, symbolizing Truth. This powerful image speaks to the enduring human quest for understanding and the inevitable revealing of what is hidden. “Die Zeit enthüllt die Wahrheit” has journeyed through the garden itself. It once resided in the garden of the Japanisches Palais at the behest of Augustus the Strong. Around 1730, it was moved to the Grosser Garten, although its precise location remains a mystery. By 1832, it stood near the Carolaschlösschen. After meticulous restoration, it was placed at its current location near the Palaisteich in April 2019. The surrounding area was revitalized as part of the sculpture’s relocation. Notice the clear line of sight to the Palaisteich fountain. The paths to and around the Rondell were also renewed. A hedge of field maples was planted to create a backdrop. Benches offer a place to contemplate the sculpture and its message. The restoration of “Die Zeit enthüllt die Wahrheit” and its new setting are part of a larger project to preserve the sculptures in the Grosser Garten. This 3.7 million Euro undertaking includes restoring 22 sandstone sculptures, 12 marble works, and 26 sandstone pedestals. The dedication to preserving these treasures ensures they will continue to inspire and provoke thought for generations to come. Here, in the heart of Dresden, “Die Zeit enthüllt die Wahrheit” reminds us that even as time marches forward, the truth will ultimately be revealed.
