Quench your thirst for history at the Leonard Montefiore Drinking Fountain. This isn’t just any fountain. It’s a poignant memorial a testament to a remarkable young man. Erected in 1884 it stands as a tribute to Leonard Montefiore a friend of Oscar Wilde and Arnold Toynbee. He was a remarkable individual a secretary of the Society for the Extension of University Teaching in Tower Hamlets. He was also a member of the Jewish Board of Guardians at just 25 years old and a champion of women’s suffrage. Sadly Leonard died young at only 27 years of age. This fountain is believed to be his only memorial. It’s a vital link to the history of the Jewish East End one of the last fragments of that rich past. The Leonard Montefiore Drinking Fountain bears two inscriptions. One is a commemorative message the other a moving poem. “Clear brain and sympathetic heart A spirit aflame with love for man Hands quick to labour slow to part If any good since time began A soul can fashion such souls can.” The words are a fitting tribute to a life cut short. The fountain itself has seen better days. At one point all its metalwork was gone. It wasn’t functioning. Graffiti marred its surface. But thanks to the Heritage of London Trust the Leonard Montefiore Drinking Fountain has been lovingly restored. In 2023 it was unveiled again. Rabbi Julia Neuberger and Rabbi Dr Andrew Goldstein officiated alongside local campaigner Clive Bettington. The Leonard Montefiore Drinking Fountain now flows freely once more offering water and a powerful reflection on a life well-lived a symbol of the enduring spirit of the Jewish East End.
