Did you know that the Bercy Auto-Train once carried thousands of cars? This very spot hummed with activity. Families loaded their vehicles. Excited holidaymakers prepared for sunny escapes. The Bercy Auto-Train was a vital link between Parisian life and the French Riviera. For over sixty years it offered a unique service. Passengers could travel comfortably by train. Their cars arrived at their destination safely.

The Bercy Auto-Train wasn’t just about convenience. It was a symbol of a bygone era. An era before widespread motorway networks. It was a romantic option. A slower more scenic way to travel. People cherished the chance to unwind on the train. Their cars handled by the railway.

However times changed. The rise of the automobile and improved highways changed travel patterns. Fewer people used the Bercy Auto-Train. By 2018 it was losing millions of euros annually. Its occupancy rate was a mere 68%. This was significantly lower than the 85% needed to remain viable.

The SNCF tried to improve the service. It reduced the number of stations served. It focused on key destinations. Paris Bercy remained a key hub. But these measures proved insufficient. In December 2019 the Bercy Auto-Train ceased operations. Thirty-three jobs were lost but employees were reassigned.

The end of the Bercy Auto-Train was met with sadness and anger. Passenger associations and unions protested. They argued that the SNCF should have invested in improving the service. Instead of simply shutting it down. They pointed to the negative environmental impact of increased road traffic. The decision highlighted the complexities of balancing financial viability and public services.

Today this site stands as a reminder. A reminder of a unique mode of transport. The Bercy Auto-Train offered a distinct blend of convenience and charm. It played a significant role in the history of French travel. Though gone it continues to resonate in the memories of those who travelled on it. A legacy of a time when taking a train with your car was a viable option.
