A triangular Parisian jewel. That’s Place Dauphine. It sits majestically at the western tip of the Ile de la Cite. This isn’t just any square. It’s a testament to King Henri IV’s vision.

Henri IV envisioned a thriving commercial center. He wanted a place for merchants and artisans to flourish. He named it after his son the Dauphin the future Louis XIII. The construction began in 1607. It marked the end of the Pont Neuf construction. This bridge connected the left and right banks of the Seine. Place Dauphine became the perfect link between these two areas.

The square’s unique triangular shape is quite striking. Imagine rows of matching three-story buildings. Each building housed shops on the ground floor. Residents lived on the upper floors. The design was revolutionary for its time. It offered a blend of commerce and living space.

These buildings weren’t for the elite. This was a radical departure from other squares of that era. Place Royale now Place des Vosges was built for the nobility. Place Dauphine welcomed commoners and merchants. It proved to be a huge success. It became a hub of activity and commerce.

Unfortunately Place Dauphine wasn’t immune to the ravages of time. The Paris Commune of 1871 brought devastation. Fires destroyed buildings. The eastern side of the square was badly damaged. But even this destruction had an unexpected consequence.

Haussmann’s planned extensive renovations of the Ile de la Cite were thwarted. His plans for Place Dauphine were thankfully abandoned. The eastern side was rebuilt. A garden was added to simulate the lost buildings. This created a beautiful open space we see today.

Now the square is a peaceful place. It’s a haven from the city’s hustle and bustle. It’s lined with charming cafes and restaurants. They attract locals and tourists alike. Sit on a bench under the chestnut trees. Imagine the centuries of history that have unfolded in this remarkable square. A true Parisian treasure.
