Nestled amidst the bustling Paris metropolitan area, lies the charming commune of Champlan. It’s a place that proudly carries the moniker, “Champlan, the meadow of Paris.” Champlan maintains a unique rural charm. This is despite its close proximity to the vibrant capital. Champlan’s history stretches back to 500 BC. Evidence suggests settlements of Gallic tribes, particularly the Parisii, and the construction of a Gallo-Roman oppidum. Traces of the Neolithic period, including a Tène III settlement, have also been unearthed during archaeological digs. Champlan officially entered recorded history in 863 AD as “Campiplatum” in a charter by Charles the Bald. By the 12th century, Champlan was under the stewardship of Benedictine monks from Longpont Abbey. These monks, affiliated with the prestigious Saint-Germain-des-Prés Abbey, constructed Champlan’s church and purchased a nearby manor in 1324. The area then became part of the Montlhéri seigneury, which was under the jurisdiction of the prévôté of Paris. Over the centuries, Champlan changed hands through marriages and sales, passing from the d’Harville family to the French monarchy and finally to the Prince of Bourbon-Condé before the French Revolution. Champlan’s modern history saw the arrival of notable figures like writer Sophie Cottin in 1793 and state counselor Jean-Bernard Baradère in 1828. The town experienced its share of turmoil. Prussian troops occupied and looted it during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Champlan continued to develop. It got a public washhouse and a town hall in the early 20th century. The arrival of the Grande Ceinture railway line, followed by the A10 motorway, drastically altered its landscape. In 1969, an experimental social housing project, “Toit et Joie,” was erected, marking a shift in Champlan’s urban fabric. Today, Champlan balances its rural heritage with the pressures of its location. It grapples with noise and air pollution. It is affected by the nearby Orly Airport and major roads. However, Champlan persists. It retains green spaces. It nurtures a community spirit. This spirit has been tested by incidents. These include a 2015 controversy surrounding the burial of a Roma infant. Champlan’s story is one of resilience and adaptation. It showcases a commune. This commune has navigated the complexities of its history and environment. It has done this while striving to preserve its unique identity as “the meadow of Paris.”
