Deep in the heart of Southeast Dallas, a hidden gem awaits. Umphress Park, a sprawling 13.9-acre oasis, offers a welcome respite from the Texas heat. Umphress Park isn’t just your average park. It boasts a unique blend of amenities. There’s a soccer field for aspiring athletes and a basketball/tennis court for those who prefer a different kind of game. Two playgrounds beckon children of all ages. Meanwhile, picnic tables and grills invite families to gather and enjoy a meal together. For those scorching summer days, Umphress Park houses one of only ten spray parks in Dallas. This refreshing feature offers free fun for everyone. Overlooking the park, a uniquely positioned pavilion sits atop a hill, providing panoramic views of the entire area. The park’s history adds another layer of intrigue. It sits on land once owned by John Umphress, one of Dallas’s early settlers. After his death, his children donated a portion of his land to the Park Department. This generous gift led to the creation of Umphress Recreation Center in 1997. Located just across the street from Umphress Park, the recreation center further enhances the community’s resources. Inside, you’ll find a weight room, restrooms, a separate activity room, and yet another playground complete with swings. Umphress Park is more than just a park.
