He even adapted the novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. These are classics of Philippine literature.

De Leon’s life wasn’t without peril. During World War II he directed propaganda films for the Japanese occupiers. However he secretly aided the Filipino resistance. This act of bravery almost cost him his life. After the war he faced treason charges. Fortunately evidence of his clandestine support for the resistance emerged. He was pardoned escaping execution.

His impact extends beyond mainstream cinema. De Leon also ventured into horror films. Some were co-directed with Eddie Romero and funded by American companies. These cult classics include Terror Is a Man The Blood Drinkers and Mad Doctor of Blood Island. He even worked with Roger Corman on Women in Cages. This is a gritty women’s prison film starring Pam Grier.
