“This park wouldn’t be the same without him,” a voice whispered. We find ourselves at George Irons’ Memorial Bench. It’s nestled amongst the vibrant life George Irons himself fostered. This bench, with its inscription “George Irons 1927 – 2017”, is a testament to a man who deeply loved this park. George served as Vice Chairman of the East Barnet Residents’ Association for many dedicated years. He was a driving force behind the “Friends of Oak Hill Park”. He diligently liaised with council officers. He tirelessly secured grants for playground equipment and even Barnet’s very first outdoor gym. In 2017, George sadly passed away at the age of 90. He was meant to receive a posthumous Civic Award. The East Barnet Residents’ Association installed this bench in his memory. It’s a place for quiet reflection, near the alfresco gym he helped bring to life. Take a seat, breathe in the fresh air, and remember George Irons. He made this park a reality.
