Founded in 1941 Nan Chiau High School initially operated as a teacher’s training college. It was the brainchild of Mr Tan Kah Kee a prominent Chinese businessman and philanthropist. The school’s first location was on Kim Yam Road thanks to a land donation from Mr Lee Kong Chian. The Japanese Occupation unfortunately interrupted its operations in 1942.
After the war’s end Nan Chiau High School reopened. In 1947 the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan transformed it into Nan Chiau Girls’ High School a school with both primary and secondary sections. Its mission was clear to elevate girls’ education in Singapore. The Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan played a crucial role in the school’s expansion and rebuilding over the years. Its growth was phenomenal.
A significant milestone arrived on March 8 1969. Mr Ong Pang Boon the then Minister for Education officially opened Nan Chiau High School’s new premises. In 1979 Nan Chiau Girls’ High School became a full-fledged institution with primary and secondary sections sharing the same site.
The school embraced change. In 1980 like many other Chinese-medium schools Nan Chiau High School switched to English as its main teaching language. A further momentous decision was made to make the school co-educational. The first male students were enrolled in 1984. This led to the school’s renaming to Nan Chiau High School.
Nan Chiau High School continued to flourish but its old premises became insufficient. In 2001 both the primary and secondary sections relocated to Sengkang as separate schools. Nan Chiau High School maintained its commitment to holistic student development. It was recognized as a Special Assistance Plan school in 2012 a testament to its quality education.
2013 marked another high point. Nan Chiau High School received the prestigious School Distinction Award. It was a recognition of the school’s all-around educational excellence. 2020 brought more success when Nan Chiau High School was chosen as a Chinese Language Elective Programme school further strengthening its bilingual and bicultural education. The school added a new talent area Bilingualism to its Direct School Admission program. This is just one example of how Nan Chiau High School continues to nurture promising students in performing arts sports visual arts and bilingualism.
