Yishun Secondary School

On a seemingly ordinary day in December 1986, Mr. Leong Kah Chong took the helm of Yishun Secondary School (YSS). He became the first principal of this newly established institution. Yishun Secondary School’s story began in Yishun, Singapore. Specifically, it’s located at 4 Yishun Street 71. Initially, in early 1986, the building housed not only Yishun Secondary School but also Yishun Town Secondary School and Yishun Junior College. Imagine the bustling atmosphere, the mix of students, the shared spaces. It was a temporary arrangement. By late March 1986, YSS and YTSS moved to the YTSS campus. Yishun Secondary School returned to its permanent home on December 17, 1986. The official opening ceremony, however, took place a little later. On August 19, 1988, Member of Parliament Koh Lip Lin officially opened Yishun Secondary School. The school underwent significant changes over the years. A new extension block allowed YSS to become a single-session school in 1999. In 2002, YSS participated in the Programme for Rebuilding and Improving Existing schools (PRIME). This program introduced gardens and ponds. These additions created a welcoming common space for students and staff to connect and interact. Yishun Secondary School continued to grow and evolve. In 2011, the school celebrated its 25th anniversary. A key event during the celebration was the launch of the YSS Heritage Walk. Another milestone occurred in 2014. YSS became the first school in Singapore to establish the Applied Learning Programme (ALP) in Sonic Arts. This innovative program combines Music, Media, and Technology. It provides students with a foundation in areas like Music Technology and Recording Arts. In 2017, Yishun Secondary School achieved two remarkable feats. They conducted the Largest Kickboxing Pad Work Session in Singapore, involving 120 students. They also created the Largest Logo made out of coloring books. This massive logo, measuring 6.9 meters by 9.5 meters, was later donated to elderly residents. Yishun Secondary School’s motto, “We seek, We strive, We soar”, reflects the school’s commitment to continuous learning and growth.
