Rising majestically on the corner of Papanui Road and Church Lane stands All Souls Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to resilience a phoenix risen from the ashes of the 2010 Christchurch earthquakes. All Souls Church replaced St Mary’s Merivale and St Matthew’s St Albans. Both were damaged beyond repair. The combined parishes decided to build anew symbolizing a fresh start.

The original St Mary’s stood on this very spot since 1866. It had a wooden structure initially. A magnificent stone church replaced it in 1927. That church stood until the devastating earthquakes of 2011. All Souls Church is a stunning contemporary building. It’s over 1000 square meters. The worship space holds up to 250 people. A large foyer connects to a hall for 150-200 people depending on seating. There are smaller spaces for community activities.

But the real showstopper is the chapel. It’s a large white opaque glass cone. Light spills in illuminating stained glass windows. These windows are from the original churches. Twelve windows from St Mary’s are carefully placed in steel frames. Architects Warren and Mahoney tested the glass opacity extensively. They ensured the light reached the back of each window. The chapel seats 36 people. It’s perfect for small services or quiet reflection.

Few elements from the original churches survived. But some special items did. Three windows from St Mary’s made it. So did the World War One memorial window from St Matthew’s. These hold significant historical value. The $6.3 million project was funded by insurance money. Higgs Construction completed the building in late 2019. All Souls Church is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of hope and community rebirth. It’s a place of worship and reflection a beautiful modern structure that honors the past. And it won a 2020 Canterbury Architecture Award. The award recognized its elegant design and inviting atmosphere. It’s a stunning place. It stands as a beacon of hope and faith in the heart of Merivale.
