Established on June 1 1957 UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta stands proudly before you. Its story is one of growth and transformation. Initially the Academy of Religious Sciences ADIA it trained civil servants as religious experts. This was a crucial step in Indonesia’s religious landscape. ADIA aimed to foster a holistic understanding of religion.

In 1960 ADIA merged with PTAIN Yogyakarta. The newly formed IAIN al-Jamiah al-Hukumiyah was based in Jakarta. It had two faculties: Education Tarbiyah and Arts Adab. This marked a significant expansion of its scope and influence. The university’s reach expanded further.

By 1963 it was officially named IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Prof Drs H Sunardjo became the rector. The name Syarif Hidayatullah honors Sunan Gunung Jati. He was a key figure in spreading Islam in Java. His name is a symbol of religious tolerance and leadership.

The university continued to grow. By 1988 it included faculties of Education Tarbiyah Arts Adab Theology Ushuluddin Law Sharia and Preaching Dakwah. A faculty of Education was even established in Pontianak. This demonstrates its commitment to national development.

A major milestone occurred on May 20 2002. IAIN became UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. This presidential decree granted it the same status as other state universities. This signified equal standing and recognition among Indonesian universities.

The integration of religious and general sciences became its core mission. In 2004 the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences was established. This reflects a commitment to comprehensive learning and development.

On February 26 2008 UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta became a Public Service Agency BLU. This allowed it to focus on public service rather than profit. This transformation emphasized its commitment to improving the nation. The university focused on efficiency and productivity improving services and achieving broader public welfare goals.
