Remembered as a beacon of character. That is the Normal Hall. It stands proudly as part of the Philippine Normal University. This hall whispers stories of generations of future educators.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine the cornerstone being laid in 1913. Construction began on this important building. William E. Parsons designed the three-story concrete structure.

Completed in 1914, the Normal Hall opened its doors. It housed 260 residents. Some were students from nearby schools. The Normal Hall quickly became more than just a dormitory. It was a place of community. It was a place of growth. It was a place of character building.

Every effort was made to render the Normal Hall a home. It had health, exercise, amusement, and study facilities. Special instruction in calisthenics and games were given. These took place on the athletic field bordered by the wings of the building. The dormitory also contained a carefully chosen library. It held over two thousand volumes.

The Normal Hall reflects the same distinct V-shaped configuration. It shares this with the Philippine Normal School. Parsons designed both buildings with harmonizing window galleries. The building has three stories and a roof deck. Reinforced concrete and Philippine indigenous materials were used. Locally sourced hardwood and capis shells added to its unique character.

The Normal Hall adapted foreign styles to its distinct context. Significant architectural details include columns. They showcase classical orders throughout the structure. Grand and winding staircases flank either side of the foyer. Glazed ceramics add a unique blue hue to the main sala areas.

Renovations have altered the facade from hardwood to concrete. Some capiz elements have been modernized into glass panes. These mimic the articulation of capiz panels. The renovations kept the character of Parsons’ original design.

For over a century, Normal Hall sheltered women of the nation. It has discontinued its use as a dormitory. Its foundations and historical significance remain intact. Efforts are underway to preserve this landmark. The National Museum and the Philippine Normal University are working together. They want to protect it for future generations.

Declared a National Cultural Treasure. The Normal Hall stands as a testament to architectural and artistic history. It is a reminder of the Normal Hall’s important role. It helped shape the educators of the Philippines. It is a symbol of character building and social graces.
