Overlooking the Danube, Budakalász whispers tales of resilience. Budakalász is a town in the Budapest metropolitan area. It holds a significant place in Hungary’s history, particularly during World War II. Budakalász became a deportation center in 1944. Thousands of Jews were held here in brutal conditions at the Budakalász brickyards before being sent to Auschwitz and other locations in Austria. The brickyards, overcrowded and lacking basic necessities, became a symbol of suffering. Survivors recounted the harsh realities they faced. They slept outdoors without shelter, endured hunger and boredom for weeks, and were subjected to the cruelty of Hungarian gendarmes and Nazi SS officers. More than 24,000 people were deported from Budakalász, Monor, and other smaller sites in Deportation Zone VI between July 6 and July 8, 1944. Today, Budakalász stands as a reminder of this dark period. It serves as a testament to the strength of those who survived and a memorial to those who perished. While the scars of the past remain, Budakalász has also embraced a brighter future. It’s known for its twin towns, Ada in Serbia, Kahl am Main in Germany, and Lueta in Romania, symbolizing international cooperation and understanding. Lupa Beach, often called “Budapest’s Seaside,” offers a vibrant contrast to its somber history, providing a place for recreation and enjoyment. This duality makes Budakalász a compelling destination. It offers a glimpse into both the tragedies and triumphs of the human spirit.
