“One hundred fifteen years old and still spinning” This is the Kőrhinta carousel in Budapest.

Right here stands a marvel of Art Nouveau. The Kőrhinta a carousel built in 1906 is a testament to Budapest’s rich history. Its ornate building houses a magical world of painted horses and chariots. The Kőrhinta has spun for generations entertaining children and adults alike.

Originally located in Vidám Park the Kőrhinta moved to its current home in the Budapest Municipal Zoo. This was after the Vidám Park was absorbed by the zoo. The carousel’s move was part of the zoo’s expansion project. The zoo wisely chose to preserve this historical gem. They included the Kőrhinta as part of the zoo’s new attractions.

During its 1996 restoration workers made amazing discoveries. They unearthed ten to fifteen layers of paint on the horses and carriages. They also learned that the inner row of stationary horses was older. These horses came from another carousel. The original power source for the carousel was quite unexpected horses hidden in the basement. The renovation was partly funded by public donations.

What makes the Kőrhinta truly unique is its design. The outer row of horses faces outwards. This is perpendicular to the direction of the carousel’s rotation. These horses have spring-like mechanisms. Riders can operate these with handles. This gives the horses a rocking motion. This unique feature is similar to that of a Derby Racer. Besides horses the carousel also features ornate chariots and rocking boats.

The Kőrhinta received the 1997 Europa Nostra Award. This award recognizes the preservation of cultural heritage. The carousel’s exquisite restoration fully deserved this prestigious accolade. The Kőrhinta stands as a symbol of Budapest’s enduring spirit. It is a reminder of the city’s rich past and its commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. The meticulously maintained horses and the ornate building are a breathtaking sight. This magical carousel continues to delight visitors of all ages. The Kőrhinta is more than just a ride. It is a living piece of Budapest’s vibrant past. It’s a reminder of the city’s dedication to the preservation of its unique cultural legacy. It remains a beloved landmark for generations to come.
