In 1787, a French Catholic priest, Bishop Arnaud-Antoine Garnault, sought refuge in Penang. He established a humble Malay school on Church Street. This act of resilience marked the seed of what would become the prestigious St Xavier’s Institution. St Xavier’s Institution stands as a testament to the enduring power of education. Officially established in 1852, the school’s roots intertwine with the very founding of George Town. The school’s name honors St. Francis Xavier, a pioneering Christian missionary whose influence spread across Asia. The original school building, sadly, met its demise during World War II, destroyed by Allied bombing raids. Undeterred, classes resumed in makeshift “attap huts” on the school field. The current building, a symbol of rebirth and perseverance, was completed in 1954. St Xavier’s Institution, a beacon of knowledge in Penang, has educated generations of boys, and more recently, girls in Form 6. The students, known as Xaverians or Lasallians, carry with them a legacy of “Labor Omnia Vincit” – Labour Conquers All. St Xavier’s Institution even has two feeder primary schools, one in Air Itam and another on Jalan Brother James. From its humble beginnings as a Malay school to its present grandeur, St Xavier’s Institution’s journey mirrors the resilience and growth of Penang itself. It stands not just as an educational institution, but as a living embodiment of history, a place where the echoes of the past inspire the leaders of tomorrow.
