Gravel and clay formed this serene lake. This is Kildevældsparken. This small park offers a green escape in Copenhagen’s Østerbro district. Kildevældsparken sits nestled between Vognmandsmarken, Bellmansgade and Borgervænget.

Let’s wander into Kildevældsparken. It spans just 0.77 hectares. That is a little more than a football field. Despite its size Kildevældsparken offers a peaceful retreat.

The park’s story began in the late 1800s. The area became a gravel and clay source. This material was used to construct the Freeport and Langelinjekajen. The excavation created the lake that you see today. Kildevældsparken itself was established in 1926 and 1927.

The park’s name comes from a former country house and restaurant. It stood at the corner of Østerbrogade and Kildevældsgade. Kildevældsparken was officially protected in 1977. This ensured its preservation for future generations.

Notice how Kildevældsparken is surprisingly hilly. This creates several viewpoints around the lake. The lake has no natural inlets or outlets. A fountain aerates the water.

Many birds find refuge here. You might spot gray geese. You might also see blackbirds and various types of gulls. Even the occasional birds of prey such as buzzards have been seen here.

Kildevældsparken has been expanded in 2016. The Frisporet activity area was added to the north. This area is designed for children. It features a path winding through natural areas. Play equipment dots the landscape. The name Frisporet nods to the area’s past. It was once part of the railway. The railway was the Frihavnsbanen. It ran here until it was rerouted in 1931.

Today Kildevældsparken is a protected green space. It offers recreational opportunities. It preserves the park’s unique character. Kildevældsparken invites locals and visitors alike. They come to relax and enjoy its tranquil atmosphere. So take a moment. Breathe in the fresh air. Appreciate this small but significant park.
