Opera? Not quite. The Bayview Opera House Ruth Williams Memorial Theatre never actually hosted an opera. But don’t let that fool you. This place is packed with stories. This is San Francisco’s oldest theater. It stands proudly at 4705 3rd Street.
Established in 1888, the Bayview Opera House became the cultural heart of the Bayview neighborhood. It is located in San Francisco’s African American Arts and Cultural District. It started as the South San Francisco Opera House.
Imagine horse-drawn carriages lining these streets. Picture well-dressed patrons excitedly entering the theater. They were eager to see dramas and vaudeville acts. Famous actors and actresses graced this very stage.
The Bayview Opera House was built by the South San Francisco Masonic Lodge #212. It served as their performance hall. Architect Henry Geilfuss designed the building. He blended Italianate, Gothic, Eastlake, and Stick elements. This created a unique Victorian style.
The building amazingly survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. A Masonic Hall once stood next door. It was replaced with an open-air entrance porch in 1975. For years, the opera house served as a community center. It hosted gatherings, cultural events, fairs, and political rallies.
The theater got a new name. It became the Bayview Opera House Ruth Williams Memorial Theatre. This honored Ruth Williams. She was a producer, playwright, and actress. Ruth Williams influenced the careers of Danny Glover and Cindy Herron. Cindy Herron was a founding member of En Vogue.
From 2014 to 2016, the Bayview Opera House underwent a $5.3 million renovation. The budget eventually reached $5.7 million. This facelift included a renovated grand entrance. It highlighted the historic building’s facade. An outdoor stage with permanent seating was added. The building became ADA accessible.
The Bayview Opera House is more than just a theater. It is a community hub. The Bayview Opera House hosts the Community Recording Studio. It is home to the Bayview Opera House Dance Troupe. The Young and Gifted Choir also calls this place home. It began functioning as a youth and dance center in 1989.
