Amidst the bustling heart of Sausalito, a small, triangle-shaped haven beckons. Viña del Mar Park. This isn’t just any park. It’s a time capsule, whispering tales of a world’s fair, a city’s resilience, and a touch of artistic whimsy. Viña del Mar Park, named after Sausalito’s Chilean Sister City, stands as a testament to the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition. This grand event, celebrating the Panama Canal’s opening, also showcased San Francisco’s recovery from the devastating 1906 earthquake. The park’s centerpiece? Two majestic concrete elephants. These aren’t just ordinary statues. They are echoes of a bygone era, re-cast from the original papier-mâché giants that graced the exposition’s Court of the Universe. Designed by William Faville, a Sausalito native, these elephants originally stood at the base of towering flagpoles, adorned in vibrant colors and sparkling jewels. When the fair ended, Faville couldn’t bear to see his creations demolished. He had them ferried across the bay to his hometown, where they found a new home in Viña del Mar Park. The original elephants, affectionately nicknamed Jumbo and PeeWee, weathered the elements for nearly two decades. During the 1930s, they were meticulously recast in concrete, ensuring their enduring presence in the park. The park also boasts a beautiful fountain, another salvaged treasure from the exposition. This fountain, like the elephants, underwent a transformation from delicate papier-mâché to sturdy concrete. It now stands as a graceful complement to the majestic elephants. Viña del Mar Park isn’t just a historical landmark. It’s a vibrant community space, a place where locals and visitors alike can bask in the beauty of its unique art and the stories they tell. It’s a reminder of a world’s fair that captivated millions, a city that rose from the ashes, and the vision of an architect who brought a touch of magic to his hometown.
