“A passage named after a woman?” you might wonder, eyebrows raised. Here in Sceaux, just outside the bustling heart of Paris, lies Passage Marguerite Renaudin. Marguerite Renaudin, a woman of quiet strength and deep compassion. Though she herself lived a life touched by tragedy, she instilled in her son, Hugues, a profound sense of social responsibility.

Hugues Renaudin, a notary in Sceaux, dedicated his life and fortune to helping those less fortunate. The legacy of his mother’s compassion resonated deeply within him. When his young wife, also named Marguerite, died at the age of 34, Hugues channeled his grief into a mission. He would honor both Marguerites – his mother and his wife – by creating a better life for the most vulnerable in his community.

In their memory, he established the Fondation Sainte Marguerite. This expansive complex, built in 1895, included an orphanage, a hospice, and even a small maternity ward added in 1923. But Hugues’ vision stretched far beyond the walls of the foundation. He understood that true change meant addressing the root causes of poverty and hardship.

Inspired by the social reforms of his time, he created gardens for working-class families, promoting self-sufficiency and healthy living. He envisioned decent housing for workers living in deplorable conditions, building twelve cottages with modern amenities, a stark contrast to the slums they replaced. Passage Marguerite Renaudin stands as a testament to this legacy: a quiet reminder of a mother’s love and a son’s dedication to keeping that love alive through acts of remarkable generosity.
