Fürstenried West is part of a larger story. It’s one of three phases of a massive urban development project. This project began in 1959. The municipality and Stadtsparkasse München the Munich savings bank were the driving forces. They envisioned a modern residential area. This area would sit conveniently close to the city center.
The first phase Fürstenried Ost featured the striking Sparkassenhochhaus. This 14-story building was a marvel of its time. Architects Franz Ruf and Fred Angerer designed it. Completed in 1961 it was the largest single residential building in Bavaria. The building earned the Association of German Architects BDA’s first prize in Bavaria in 1967.
