A quiet residential area. That’s Fürstenried West. But its quietude hides a vibrant history. Nestled near the A95 autobahn Fürstenried West wasn’t always so tranquil.

Fürstenried West is part of a larger story. It’s one of three phases of a massive urban development project. This project began in 1959. The municipality and Stadtsparkasse München the Munich savings bank were the driving forces. They envisioned a modern residential area. This area would sit conveniently close to the city center.

The first phase Fürstenried Ost featured the striking Sparkassenhochhaus. This 14-story building was a marvel of its time. Architects Franz Ruf and Fred Angerer designed it. Completed in 1961 it was the largest single residential building in Bavaria. The building earned the Association of German Architects BDA’s first prize in Bavaria in 1967. This is a testament to its innovative design and lasting impact.

Our focus though is Fürstenried West. Phase two of this ambitious plan. This phase consisted of low-rise high-density single-family homes. Built between 1962 and 1963 it’s a testament to a different architectural approach. This approach prioritized community living within a green and spacious environment.

The entire Fürstenried development is named after Schloss Fürstenried. This is a beautiful palace built in 1715 by Max Emanuel Elector of Bavaria. It served as a hunting lodge. The palace stands as a reminder of a vastly different time. A time when Fürstenried was rural and tranquil.

Today Fürstenried West is a successful example of urban planning. It demonstrates the careful balance between density and green space. It provides comfortable family living. It offers excellent transport links to the city center. While the area is modern its history is rich and fascinating. A blend of past and present. This is what makes Fürstenried West such a unique and rewarding place to explore. So take a moment. Breathe in the peaceful air. Let the history of Fürstenried West settle upon you.
