“A city’s boulevards breathe life into its story,” I began, gesturing towards Boulevard National in La Garenne-Colombes. “Boulevard National may not be as famous as the Champs-Élysées, but it holds its own charm.” I paused for effect. “This boulevard,” I continued, “reflects the unique character of La Garenne-Colombes, a town absorbed into the Parisian suburbs.” I explained that the very concept of a boulevard originated in Paris under Louis XIV. Originally, “boulevard” referred to the flat top of a rampart. When Louis XIV had the Paris city walls demolished, these fortified areas were transformed into grand promenades. Boulevard National, like many Parisian boulevards, echoes this history. Though not one of the original Grands Boulevards of the 17th century, it shares their essence: a wide thoroughfare designed for both pedestrians and carriages. “Imagine,” I prompted, “the evolution of this very boulevard. From open fields to bustling markets, then grand houses and, finally, part of the sprawling suburbs.” I led the group along, pointing out architectural details. I noted the Haussmannian influence in the urban planning—the uniformity of facades, reminiscent of the grand boulevards in central Paris. “Boulevard National,” I emphasized, “witnessed La Garenne-Colombes’s transformation from a separate town to a Parisian suburb.” This absorption occurred in 1860, when Napoleon III expanded Paris by annexing surrounding towns. The changes brought a new era of urbanization. I then encouraged the group to imagine life along Boulevard National in the early 20th century, with trams replacing carriages and the increasing flow of people between Paris and its new suburbs. “Boulevard National,” I concluded, “is more than just a street. It’s a thread in the vibrant tapestry of Paris, a testament to urban growth and change.”
