Peeking out from behind the lush trees is the Pascual Modernist House. Here we stand before a unique slice of Manila’s architectural history.
The Pascual Modernist House offers a glimpse into the modernist movement in the Philippines. It stands at 2138 Dr M.L. Carreon Street. This three-story structure provides a view of the nearby Pasig River. It also overlooks the Estero de Pandacan. Riverside houses like this one often feature verandas to capture the breeze.
Built in April 1948 the Pascual Modernist House is a blend of materials. Reinforced concrete masonry and wood come together in its design. Take note of the three reinforced concrete pylons on the facade. The mirador or watchtower is another striking feature. It adorns the corner of the house. Vertical and horizontal design elements complement the overall structure.
Inside the Pascual Modernist House look for the built-in cabinetry. Niches and cove ceilings add to its character. Stylized geometric forms are a recurring theme. The first three steps of the stairs and the main entrance feature granolithic flooring. The entire ground floor is covered in “Machuca” tiles. On the second floor geometric ventilation panels catch the eye. They display the original owner’s initials a V embellishing the wall partitions. Surprisingly the plumbing fixtures are original from the 1940s.
Originally this house belonged to Mr Jose Velo. In 1984 Engr Rodolfo C Pascual bought the property. The Pascual Modernist House became his. According to the present owner the house served as a movie location in the 1950s. It has survived while many older structures decayed. Many of those vacation houses built in other styles have been demolished. They are now replaced by modern developments.
Santa Ana was once known as the Forbes Park of Manila. The Pascual Modernist House stands as a testament to this era. Santa Ana was spared from destruction during World War II. As a result many ancestral houses still stand today. The Pascual Modernist House stands as a reminder of Manila’s rich architectural heritage. Its unique design elements and historical significance make it a treasure.
