He served the San Francisco Police Department with distinction for 11 years. He was known for his bravery and commitment to the city. Tragically, his life was cut short on July 16, 1982, ten days after a confrontation with a robbery suspect. Sergeant Macaulay, ever vigilant, spotted a vehicle wanted in connection with a supermarket robbery. Near the intersection of Van Ness Avenue and Willow Alley, he stopped the car. As he approached, the suspect tried to draw a pistol from his briefcase. Sergeant Macaulay reacted swiftly, attempting to restrain him. But the suspect managed to draw a second hidden pistol. He fired, fatally wounding Sergeant Macaulay. The suspect fled, later taking his own wife’s life before ending his own. Sergeant Macaulay’s dedication earned him numerous accolades during his career. These included three Medals of Valor, five Police Commissioner awards, and over 100 Captain’s Commendations.
