Imagine a time long before Dubrovnik’s walls rose. Picture Podimoč then a small settlement nestled on the Adriatic coast. Ancient Illyrians lived here. They built their homes on hills. They buried their dead in stone-built tumuli. Thirty of these tumuli remain near Podimoč even today. Their presence hints at a rich history. Podimoč’s story stretches back to the second millennium BC.

Podimoč’s strategic coastal location held significance. It was close to Dubrovnik but far enough to remain its own entity. Its history intertwines with Dubrovnik’s. For centuries Podimoč was a quiet village. It was part of Zahumlje until the Tatar invasion of 1241. The center of the Dubrovnik Littoral shifted. After that shift Podimoč was under the rule of various powers.

In 1399 Podimoč became part of the Republic of Ragusa. Ragusa bought it from Bosnian King Ostoja for 1500 gold ducats. The Republic of Ragusa lasted until 1806. After its fall Podimoč passed under French rule then Habsburg rule. Life was hard for Podimoč’s inhabitants. They were mainly farmers and herders. In 1857 Podimoč had 163 inhabitants. By 1910 only 82 remained.

The Yugoslav Wars brought tragedy to Podimoč. In 1991 the Yugoslav People’s Army attacked the Dubrovnik Littoral. Podimoč was captured looted and burned. For a time it was virtually deserted. After the war reconstruction began. A devastating earthquake struck in 1996. However the people of Podimoč rebuilt their homes and their lives.

Today Podimoč is part of the municipality of Dubrovačko primorje. Its population is small but its spirit remains strong. Its ancient past its resilience through hardship and its connection to Dubrovnik make Podimoč a remarkable place. The church of Saint Anne stands as a testament to this. It was destroyed but rebuilt. It speaks of faith and hope in the face of adversity. Podimoč a hidden gem on the Croatian coast. A place with a story waiting to be discovered. A place where history and nature intertwine.
