Lost in the labyrinthine depths of Paris’s metro system I stumbled upon a fascinating fact. Rue de l’Embranchement isn’t a street at all. It’s a ghost of a street. A forgotten ambition of a bygone era.

The Rue de l’Embranchement doesn’t exist on any map today. Yet its phantom presence lingers in the depths of the city. It existed only as a planned branch line for Paris Metro Line 8. This planned branch would have connected to the Porte de Sèvres.

Imagine the engineers. Their dreams of extending Line 8 to the west. Their vision of a robust network reaching further into Paris’s outer districts. They built a special double station at Grenelle. This ingenious design allowed trains to be sent to either Auteuil or the proposed Porte de Sèvres branch.

But alas fate intervened. The ambitious project was abandoned. The planned Rue de l’Embranchement remained unfinished. The planned branch to Porte de Sèvres never materialized. Only the traces remain within the Grenelle station.

Line 8’s route evolved. Instead of the western branch the line veered towards Balard. The ambitious plan for the Rue de l’Embranchement was quietly shelved. The original plans are fascinating though. They reveal an intriguing alternate history of the Paris Metro.

Today instead of a bustling street you’ll find only echoes of what might have been. The unfinished station at Grenelle serves as a quiet testament to the Rue de l’Embranchement. A forgotten dream buried beneath the Parisian streets. A reminder that even in a city renowned for its steadfastness change can be sudden. Change can be unexpected. Change can be entirely forgotten.
