Wouldn’t you agree that the Forêt Régionale de Bondy holds secrets of brigands and kings? It is more than just a forest. It is a fragment of an ancient woodland. It once stretched across eastern Paris. The Forêt Régionale de Bondy now covers 170 hectares.
Long ago the Forêt de Bondy had a bad reputation. Legends whispered of brigands lurking within its depths. In 675 Childéric II was allegedly assassinated here. He was a king of Austrasia.
Over time the forest faced challenges. It was heavily exploited during the Middle Ages. People needed raw materials and firewood for Paris. In the 16th century parts of the forest were converted into farmland. The French Revolution further reduced its size. Housing developments consumed even more of the Forêt de Bondy in the 19th century.
Despite these challenges the Forêt Régionale de Bondy persevered. It became a popular pilgrimage site. People visited the Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Anges in Clichy-sous-Bois. Legend says that an angel saved three merchants from brigands. The church and its September pilgrimage drew many people.
In the 19th century the Forêt de Bondy supplied Paris with gypsum. This was used to make plaster. New transport links helped this. The canal de l’Ourcq opened in 1813. Railway lines followed. These lines facilitated the extraction and export of resources. They also opened the area to urbanization.
Victor Hugo found inspiration in the Forêt de Bondy. He set the Thénardier’s farm in Montfermeil in Les Misérables. Madame de Sévigné also enjoyed relaxing here.
Today the Forêt Régionale de Bondy is a vital part of Paris’s green belt. The Île-de-France region acquired it gradually from 1968. The Agence des espaces verts manages the site since 1999. In August 2022 the Forêt de Bondy gained protection status.
The Forêt Régionale de Bondy boasts diverse flora and fauna. It has oak trees. It has chestnut trees and hornbeams. There are beeches, maples, and alders. Ponds, marshes and streams create habitats for aquatic species. The forest is home to a surprising variety of birds. It hosts about a quarter of the nesting birds in the Île-de-France region. The forest is part of the Natura 2000 network.
The Forêt de Bondy is not just a forest. It is a place of recreation. It is a place for relaxation. It is a place for connecting with nature. The forest welcomes about one million visitors each year. They come to enjoy its tranquility and beauty. Its history is etched into its trees and pathways. The Forêt Régionale de Bondy remains a green haven.
